LEWIS SALVAGES AT SIMPSON
Ian ‘The Fly’ Lewis rescued a night
that could have ended disastrously for the Eureka Garages and Sheds
series leader after starting from the back of the A-Main via the B-Main.
After leading the series by over
100 points, Simpson Speedway started off rather well for ‘The
Fly’ and the Camden Neon Signs Racing team with a second place
finish in their first heat.
Unfortunately the second heat provided
the stumbling block for the Adtrans, Camden Neon Signs, J&J Auto
Racing car with Lewis entering the turns a bit too hard and spinning
the car on the difficult dry surface.
To add trouble to the equation, the car sustained damage after a collision
with another car who started further behind, which damaged the front
end.
“I just went in too hard
and lost control of the car. You can only hope that everyone behind
can see that you have spun so they can avoid hitting you, unlucky
for us they didn’t so we had to repair the front end damage,”
said Lewis.
The dreaded DNF left ‘The
Fly’ to contest the B-Main from the outside front row where
he skipped to a comfortable victory in the 12 laps, setting the fastest
lap almost a second quicker then any of the other B-Main competitors.
After transferring from the B-Main,
Lewis would start from thirteenth in the A-Main, with a lot of work
ahead for the experienced driver to do on an already difficult track
to pass on.
To make matters worse, the A-Main was shortened to 20 laps, therefore
not leaving ‘The Fly’ a lot of time to move up the field
and not lose too much of his series points lead.
Lewis ended up finishing in sixth
position on a very black circuit with lots of rubber laid down and
made the most of his opportunities to move up the field through traffic.
“Turns three and four were
about the only places I could pass cars on as the track was quite
black and was a challenge for many of the guys out there. Sixth isn’t
too bad, considering where we started but it means we have to get
the next few rounds right if we are to stay on top of this points
ladder.”
‘The Fly’ now leads
the SRA Eureka Garages and Sheds series by a slender 43 points over
John Vogels as the Camden Neon Signs Racing team prepares to attack
Avalon Raceway this coming Saturday.
