LEWIS ON THE MONEY AT SPEEDWAY CITY
Speedway City provided a happy hunting ground for
Ian Lewis and the Camden Neon Signs Racing team at the Sprintcar Nationals
on the weekend, with ‘The Fly’ a genuine podium contender
at the conclusion.
Two important heat races on night
one confronted the Adtrans, Camden Neon Signs, J&J Auto Racing
car with Lewis forced to start an undesired mid-pack in each. After
making up one position in the first heat to finish fourth, ‘The
Fly’ was menacingly quick in his second heat to climb from sixth
into second behind Max Dumesny.
After securing enough points to
start out of eighth place in the preliminary A-Main, Lewis was set
to face a difficult track that was fast, but contained ruts, which
would unsettle and throw the Victoria 18 car about.
‘The Fly’ continued
on with his earlier heat race pace and pushed through the field into
the top five, until the car caught a rut and bicycled onto two wheels
and fell back into 13th position.
“The car was still very good,
I fell down the order but was able to come back again despite losing
a fair bit of ground when the car bicycled onto two wheels,"
said Lewis.
Unfazed by the moment, Lewis pushed
on while the Adtrans, Camden Neon Signs, J&J Auto Racing car performed
a couple of spectacular wheel stands on its way to ending up where
the car started, in eighth.
“There was no real race line,
I was running up high and down low. It depended on traffic and trying
to avoid the ruts that had developed".
“Of late we’ve had
some hard luck stories at Speedway City but we really got a handle
on the shock absorbers for this event and it definitely showed.”
Night two began with only one heat
race for each competitor with the heat grid determined by points.
Lewis started out of fourth however was involved in a tangle of cars
involving Robbie Farr, Ben Atkinson and Cameron Gessner and as a result
had to perform a few doughnuts on the infield skid pad just to rejoin
in the race and keep the car running.
‘The Fly’ went on to finish fifth and was the eighth highest
points scorer for the event, leaving him two positions short of a
dash race start.
“The tangle bent a few things,
mainly the steering so the car was a bit of a handful. We finished,
that was the main thing, to not lose a lot of ground in points.”
The 40 lap A-Main began well for
Lewis who was aided by some early race stoppages to eventually climb
into third position after starting eighth, even having David Murcott
challenge for position until he tagged the back of the Adtrans, Camden
Neon Signs, J&J Auto Racing car.
All was looking positive for ‘The
Fly’ until Farr came from the back of the field to take the
final place on the podium with around ten laps remaining. Unlucky
for Lewis who had the car in its strongest form over the final ten
laps but was unable to get past for third and thus settled for fourth
at the finish.
“Robbie was quick after starting
from the back of the field but it was unlucky he got past when he
did because the car was just starting to come on strong. I tried a
few attempts to get back by but wasn’t able to make the pass
stick.”
The Camden Neon Signs Racing team
takes a break from the SRA Eureka Garages and Sheds series this weekend
and travels back to South Australia to contest the South Australian
Sprintcar Title at Murray Bridge Speedway.
