THE FLY ON THE PACE HEADING INTO THE CLASSIC
Ian Lewis has bounced
back from some recent tough races to record two extremely pleasing
results, which lifts the Camden Neon Signs Racing team’s confidence
heading into one of the biggest race weekends in the country, the
Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic.
On Wednesday January 25, the Adtrans,
Camden Neon Signs, J&J Auto Racing car hit Avalon Raceway for
the Presidents Cup, where ‘The Fly’ was immediately on
the pace and looked set for a strong showing in front of his local
Victorian crowd.
After qualifying in seventh position,
Lewis would start out of fourth in his heat race, where he was able
to make up two positions to finish as the runner up behind Allan Barlee.
Lewis went on to finish second
in the A Dash to put him out of third position for the A-Main. A good
start followed and ‘The Fly’ was racing hard behind American
youngster Brian Brown who led the race.
The Adtrans, Camden Neon Signs,
J&J Auto Racing car kept getting stronger and Lewis steered the
car right on to the tail of Brown and challenged him for the lead
until he got caught out high on the track, which allowed Paul McMahan
and Max Dumesny through, dropping Lewis to fourth.
A late restart saw Robbie Farr
challenge and briefly pass Lewis for fourth, until ‘The Fly’
soon returned the favour and remained there until the race finished.
“It’s been a really
good night for the team. We had a few tough races in the SRA series
of late, so this is good for us heading into the Classic,” explained
Lewis.
An ultra competitive Kings Challenge
at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Raceway set the scene on Australia
Day for the Camden Neon Signs Racing team, with Lewis putting in a
strong showing in qualifying to record the twelfth fastest time.
‘The Fly’ started both
his heats out of sixth position and finished second behind Phil March
in his first heat, however was forced to avoid two spun cars ahead
in his second heat race and effectively had to race from the back
of the nine car field into seventh place.
The A-Main saw Lewis start out
of eleventh position, where he remained on the lead lap on a black
surfaced track with all the cars running a very fast race pace. ‘The
Fly’ was able to pass Matthew Reed with two laps remaining and
secured tenth.
“It was pretty fast out there,
the right rear tyre was worn right down to the canvas. With the close
times everyone was racing at, tenth is a solid result. We just have
to keep up this speed we’ve got over the coming races.”
The team now prepares for two nights
of racing at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway for the prestigious
Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic on January 27 & 28.
