THE FLY BRIEFLY CLUTCHES SA TITLE
Ian ‘The
Fly’ Lewis and the Camden Neon Signs Racing team were a major
threat of a Victorian team taking out the South Australian Sprintcar
Title at Murray Bridge Speedway last weekend.
Like the majority of races this
season, Lewis would start both heat races out of the middle positions.
In heat one ‘The Fly’ came out of fourth to get a great
start and sit in second place until a late yellow period allowed the
chance to get past Ian Binding to take the win. Lewis’ second
heat was again promising by finishing third after starting fifth.
Two strong heat results put the
Adtrans, Camden Neon Signs, J&J Auto Racing car as the second
highest points scorer on the night behind Phil March and would lead
the B-Dash from pole position. The six-lap event put Lewis as a definite
favourite for the 30-lap feature race after comfortably leading the
field home over Mark Reuter and Dylan Jenkin.
Starting out of second position
alongside Stephen Bell, Lewis got a magnificent start and went straight
to the lead of the race to quickly catch and start negotiating through
lapped traffic on the fourth lap.
Unfortunately for ‘The Fly’
the hand on the SA Title lost its grasp on the eighth lap when the
Adtrans, Camden Neon Signs, J&J Auto Racing car spun in turn four.
The car performed a series of infield doughnuts and rejoined the race
in sixth place.
“Before the track was graded
the setup on the car was fine but I wasn’t expecting the track
to dry out as quick as it did in the feature after the track grade.
As a result the car spun in turn four early on as I ran a similar
setup to what I had in the heats,” explained Lewis.
With the track drying out considerably,
passing was difficult with cars running the bottom line, but Lewis
earned the chance to have another crack at the leaders when the race
went under yellow on lap ten, allowing him to restart directly behind
those in front.
In a matter of laps Lewis was already
in fourth position and sat in an eventual possible podium place when
the race went under caution again at the half way mark of the A-Main.
“I thought about possibly
going high around some of the cars but I really don’t think
there was anything in the track up there for it to work, so the car
could easily have ended up in the wall. So it definitely wasn’t
worth risking that.”
Lewis easily had the speed over
the cars behind, however was so evenly matched with Bell and Luke
Dillon ahead that their respective gaps remained rather constant but
once again the Adtrans, Camden Neon Signs, J&J Auto Racing car
had trouble in turn four with the car spinning on consecutive laps
and crossing the line an unrewarding ninth.
“It’s disappointing
because we know we had the pace to win, unfortunately we opted for
the wrong setup for what happened with the track.”
One positive for the Camden Neon
Signs Racing team is the SRA Eureka Garages and Sheds series round
at Moama was rained out on the weekend, leaving Lewis still in second
place, only 36 points behind John Vogels.
