FORMULA VEE TO MAKE CAMS
NATIONAL RACING SERIES DEBUT AT PHILLIP ISLAND
At Victoria’s Phillip
Island Raceway this weekend, May 19-21, Australian Formula Vee racing
will join the card of the CAMS National Racing Series for the first
time.
The weekend will be the first of two CAMS National Racing Series rounds
to include Formula Vee racing in 2006, providing a boost for the already
growing class. In July, Formula Vee will again be an invited category,
at Eastern Creek Raceway in Sydney.
Currently in its 41st year of providing cost-effective, entry level
motorsport, Formula Vee has experienced tremendous growth in recent
times, following the introduction of the 1600cc engine.
Running on a national platform is another step in this growth, and an
opportunity to showcase Formula Vee to a larger audience.
“To race at Phillip Island and Eastern Creek with the CAMS National
Series is a great opportunity for Formula Vee,” says Category
Manager Ian Chivas.
“It really shows how strong Formula Vee has become, with the growth
experienced in recent years. Formula Vee is growing at an amazing rate,
with large fields of cars which keep on increasing and lots of interest
Australia wide.
“With the move to 1600cc, the cars produce excellent racing, are
modern in appearance and are also a lot more technically advanced than
what was remembered from the old days, yet have remained very cost-effective.”
Both Phillip Island and Eastern Creek are set to be big weekends for
the class, with 37 cars entered for Phillip Island, and even more expected
at Eastern Creek.
This weekends field contains some of the best Vee drivers from around
the country, including Queenslanders Shane Hart and Grant Bromley, New
South Wales’ Ryan Simpson and Adam Proctor, and Victorians Drew
Beacham and David Frith.
“At every Formula Vee race meeting, there is close competition
and exciting racing, and Phillip Island will be no different. We have
37 top-line competitors all champing at the bit to get on track,”
said Chivas.
“Support from within the Formula Vee community for these two events
has been overwhelming. It really stems from the support competitors
have given the State series’. The big grids and presentation of
the cars in the class is a credit to the competitors.”
Helping make the weekend possible, civil engineering firm CityWide and
recruitment giant Challenge Recruitment will sponsor the Phillip Island
outing.
“It’s great to have Citywide and Challenge Recruitment onboard
for first weekend with the CAMS National Racing Series,” says
Chivas.
“We are very grateful for their support which, again, shows that
the class is growing, to be able to attract commercial backing from
two large and successful Australian companies.”
Phillip Island will feature three six-lap races around the fast and
flowing 4.45km circuit, one on Saturday and two on Sunday.
The races will be broadcast in the following weeks on SBS’ long-running
Speedweek program, and Inside Speed on Fox Sports.
